Hello Sec 2-08 / Change Makers,
As discussed during I&E lesson:

Social Innovation summarized: Ideas -> Concepts -> Strategies
(Other steps will be discussed in the following lessons).

Challenge (9 Jan):
Look for a problem in our society / world that you would like to help solve, this problem must lead to some form of social innovation preferably in the form of product innovation (Note: this is different from a charity drive or canvassing for funds).

Once you have found the problem that you would really like to solve,
i) understand the problem,
ii) express the problem clearly
iii) discuss your proposed solution in your class I&E blog.

Date Due: Fri, 13 Jan 2012

We will go through the reflections on Monday, 16 Jan 2012.

Thank you.
Mr. Patrick Hiap

  1. In MRT cubicles at peak periods, there isn't enough structures for the passengers to hold on to. For example, when school students enter the MRT, there is usually nothing for them to hold on to, as the handles are too high up and many people are occupying the areas near the poles. Therefore, MRTs should have more structures built in them for the many passengers of different heights.

  2. In Singapore, problems faced by almost everyone is killer litter. Killer litter can be very dangerous especially when cases such as heavy objects like flower pots drop from edges of windows or vise versa. People might get hit by this dangerous objects from down below and will get hurt seriously if they are not careful. Therefore, the government should build cover walkways below HDB flats to decrease such incidents from occurring.

  3. In buses during peak hours, normally there might be no space for most passengers who want to board, but some people who wants to board deliberately pushes others in order to get on the bus. I feel that now more buses should be either double carriage or double-decker so that more people can board the buses without the need to push others, as pushing other people increases chances of people falling down in the bus, especially the elderly.

  4. In MRT stations there are not many ramps to facilitate movement for the disabled. I feel thaht they should have a compartment just allocated to the disabled as they would be easy for them to move around within the MRT

  5. in public places e.g hawker center, ppl don't return cutlery. They should install a conveyer belt to return cutlery.

  6. Most of the time, Singaporeans have problems loading heavier baggage onto the conveyor belts at the airport when they are checking their luggage in. So, there should be a type of ramp installed at the very beginning of the conveyor belt so that those luggage with wheels at the bottom can just be dragged onto the conveyor belt, instead of having the people have to carry their luggage onto the belt.

  7. In Singapore schools the sound made by dragging of chairs always disturbs someone in a way or another so may be all chairs could install a rubber base which would reduce the sound.

  8. During Peak hour bus commuters tend to squeeze and challenge each other in the queue to get on the bus and have a seat. We should have more lanes on the bus for the commuters to enter the bus.
Buses too should change their chairs to the standing seat that they use at bus interchanges so that commuters can sort of seat in a standing position in the bus to increase the spaces for more people to walk

  9. In some poorly constructed classrooms, the ventilations might be really bad. Thus, we can solve this problem to allow students to have a better learning environment and not fall sick easily, and they would not be affected.

  10. The School Eco-pond is not designed "safely" as some people have fallen into the pond with out noticing it. There must be some 'Railing' to prevent someone from falling inside.

  11. When you take out the charger, the wires are all messed up when u put it back and it is really very messy. When you take it out again is like the wires are everywhere and you dont know which one is the wire that we need.

  12. In Singapore, when waiting for a bus at a bus stop, sometimes the buses just don't come but when they do, all of the buses come at once. I think that the buses should regulate their arrival time as it'll cause a long wait. For example at Dover Mrt's bus stop, the buses come all at once thus, making the commuters impatient.

  13. In Singapore, many hawker centers, many people don't return the cutlery.

We should add in a taser to the chairs and tables. When the tray is on the table, it depresses a sensor that will sense the tray and the human on the chair. Then, if the human left the chair but the tray is still there, the taser will zap the person with small shocks. If the human decides to anyhow throw the tray, they will be sent to prison as they will recorded on the full time 24 7 video cams and recorded.

  14. The canteen is always too flooded with people that we might have to queue for a very long time and we might not even be able to get our food before recess is over.
I think that a good way to solve this is that we separate the time in which we have our recess, we don't want 600 people cramming into that tiny canteen with only 3 stores

  15. In most public hawker centers, there are times whereby the tables are dirty. We can solve this problem by employing more workers so that the place can be cleaner. This will allow the users to feel more comfortable.

  17. The school chairs have those black connecters that always scratch people, especially when they are just walking past or just sitting down.

  18. In libraries, people often don't return the books to it's original place, for example the book's name starts with an S, but the person puts in at the B section. They should install a machine that helps to return books to its original place instead of librarians running around to arrange the books.

  19. In Singapore, during the peak hours there are lots of commuters using the public transport. Most of them just want to squeeze into the train and head back home. So the public transports are very packed, so the others wouldn't be able to reach home faster. It is also very dangerous for the commuters, as they rush into the trains especially when the train's door are closing.

  20. Difficulty in caring for the disabled. There are people who are bedridden have difficulty exercising, resulting in many conditions like muscle waste & bed sores. So, if we have an exoskeleton suit, that can be connected to the brain. This is different from most exoskeletons as it concentrates on the joints.
